This year’s Write On! Workshop (WOW) will be held on May 2nd and 3rd,
the Wednesday and Thursday of the last week of classes, from 10-3 in
SUB Fiesta A and B. Ultimately, your time and participation will make
this WOW a success for us and for our students. Please contact Anna
Knutson at aknutson@unm.edu if you would like to volunteer or if you
have any further questions.

The GOAL of the Write on Workshop (student perspective)

  • Core Writing instructors to provide extra support and consultation for first-year writing students during the portfolio process.
  • Attending a consultation at WOW gives students the opportunity to work one-on-one with an “expert” without the pressure of having their work graded.
  • WOW workshops give student’s another perspective on writing and revision
  • Plus, it will be fun! Students will get to socialize, eat snacks, and meet up with first-year writers from other classes.

The GOAL of the Write on Workshop (instructor perspective)

  • One-on-one conferences with students leads to better papers, better memos, and ultimately, a more pleasant grading experience for you.
  • Reading your colleagues’ prompts will also give you an opportunity to reflect on your own teaching and curriculum before you begin grading your own portfolios. It might even give you ideas for things you may want to do next semester!
  • This will also be a great opportunity to share skills and “talk shop” with other TAs, thus supporting the teamwork and collaboration that make Core Writing great.
  • By offering your time, you are not only supporting first-year writers, but supporting the work of your colleagues.

How you can get involved

  1. Volunteer! Sign up for at least one hour or more. We need at least 40 instructors to make this happen. Contact Anna Knutson at aknutson@unm.edu as soon as possible, or schedule yourself to work by clicking HERE.
  2. Tell your students. Encourage them to work with other instructors in order to benefit from the varied insight on writing. Some instructors offer extra credit or make participation mandatory. The WOW workshop offers help in all the stages of the portfolio process, from reflective memos to over-arching revisions. Just have them bring their prompts along with their papers.

Most importantly, this event will be useful and it will be fun! Come,
socialize with other instructors, meet with students, grade some
papers, and get some snacks.
